Are you a young adult and haven’t quite found your niche in GAPIMNY? Coming this September, GAPIMNY is excited to announce the launch of DowneTime, a new monthly GAPIMNY meeting for young adult queer and questioning Asian men and transgender people. The group’s goals are to create a safe space to discuss issues and shared experiences relating to identity, community, and activism, as well as cultivate and grow GAPIMNY’s membership. Open to queer or questioning Asian men and trans folks from the ages of 18-26, the meetings will be structured around specific discussion topics that are pertinent to the group. For example, in the first meetings we will discuss the role of sexuality in Asian culture, being Asian and out at work or school, “Going home” discussions, and the role of age and ageism in queer communities. GAPIMNY’s own young adult steering committee members will facilitate the meetings.
Although New York City has many area colleges and a large young gay community, there are still few spaces where young queer Asians can find a space to simply talk about their experience with peers, and we aim to provide that space. DowneTime hopes to provide an additional space to the traditional GAPIMNY general body meeting, to specifically address topics related to young adults. By doubling our efforts to reach out to young membership, we hope to broaden GAPIMNY’s constituency and to better represent the queer Asian community. Thus, this group hopes to further build community, encourage new leadership, and work to ensure the future vitality of GAPIMNY.
Special thanks goes to APICHA (apicha.org) for graciously offering their time, space, and full support!
